The AFL Academy is currently celebrating its 20th intake by naming two commemorative sides of Academy graduates. It was launched in 1997 to prepare the very best young footballers in the country for the step up to the AFL. Academy scholarship holders are given the opportunity to develop their game in accelerated programs.

A level one squad of 25 players is selected after the AFL Under 16 Championships. A level two squad includes the best 35 Under 18 players in the country who are eligible for the next AFL draft.

The squads for the national academy are named each year by the AFL’s Talent Department.

There are more than 200 graduates of the AFL Academy on AFL lists including champions like Luke Hodge and Joel Selwood just to name a few.
